Keep Your Cool
by Jennifer Kornegay
As we head into the middle of summer in the River Region, temperatures will likely climb to the 90s – and that’s in the shade. So, unless you like pretending that your house is a sauna, your air conditioning unit will be working hard to keep you and your family comfortable. That could lead to energy bills much higher than the outside heat. But with a little preparation and an addition or two to your daily routine, you can “keep your cool” and keep more money in the bank. Follow these energy-saving and money-saving tips:
- Close any gaps or holes in your home’s exterior. Cool air will run right out of them, and hot, humid air from outside will seep in to replace it. Foam or caulk can plug most spots and remember to check the attic. In addition to sealing leaks up there, extra insulation may be needed.
- Use your ceiling fans. Most homes have at least one, yet many of us rarely turn them on. That can be a costly mistake since they are great weapons in the battle against summer’s heat. Make sure the blades are set to turn counterclockwise and push air down to create a cooling breeze.
- Pull the drapes. When you’re gone during the day, make sure your blinds and curtains are closed to keep the sun’s sweltering rays out. Even when you are home, keep window coverings closed in rooms you’re not using.
- Use a programmable thermostat. It can be hard to remember to turn the AC temperature up every time you leave your house for an extended amount of time. You won’t have to if you install a programmable thermostat. By automatically allowing the temperature to rise during times when no one is in the house, a programmable thermostat can shave as much as 30 percent off of your energy bill in a year.
- Maintain your AC. Having your air conditioning unit checked and serviced by a heating and air professional once a year can help you avoid potential problems that could cost a lot and will keep the unit running at its best. You can also aid your AC by planting tall bushes or small trees nearby to provide shade for the unit.
- Clean your filters. Regularly cleaning or replacing your air-conditioning filters will keep your unit operating more efficiently.
