Small Steps to a Healthier You

by Jennifer Kornegay

So many of us make major New Year’s resolutions that seem like great ideas at the time, but because they require drastic changes in our lifestyle, they become almost impossible to keep. This year, think small. With a few simple steps, you can make some big changes in your health.

Walk the Walk
Adding just a little distance to your daily routine can really add up over just a few months. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away from stores. Whenever the weather’s nice, get outside and take a stroll. And while you’re watching TV, get off the couch and march in place during every commercial break. Or start building up for a 5k. An Apple a Day
Every day, pick one thing you know you shouldn’t eat and substitute it with a piece of fresh fruit. Bananas and apples are always good choices but go for ripe berries or juicy oranges when they’re in season.

Find the Time
Designating five or 10 minutes each morning as “you time” can go a long way in the quest to de-stress. Spend your special moments praying, meditating or just sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.

Slow Down
At every meal, concentrate on taking things slowly. Put down your fork and savor each bite’s flavor before you go for the next one. This will give your body a chance to realize when it’s full. You’ll end up eating less and enjoy what you eat even more.

Be Thankful
Start keeping a gratitude journal and make a point to write down the things you appreciate. Keeping a written record of your blessings will aid in maintaining a positive attitude, and you can look back and reflect on the things you’re thankful for when you’re feeling low.

Drink It In
Staying hydrated is key to good health. Replace soft drinks and tea with water as often as possible. And resolve to cut back on caffeine and alcohol too. A cup of joe each day and the occasional indulgence in a cocktail are fine, but by downsizing your daily consumption of anything other than H2O, you’ll not only feel better, you’ll save money too.

Relax & Rejuvenate
Multiple studies have shown that going to bed and getting up at approximately the same time each day result in more restful sleep, which improves your overall wellbeing. Establish a relaxing routine each evening, slowly winding down your activity before you actually hit the sack. Limit the use of computers, tablets and smartphones right before bed. Studies show the “blue light” produced by these devices can make it harder for you to fall asleep.
